HC-30R 30 Watt Head with Reverb/Effects Loop Elk/Cream/Gold with
Matching ESD 2×12” 60 Watt Open Back – 4 ohm Elk/Cream/Gold Cabinet
£4395

This is what changed the amp world. The DC-30 was the company’s first design and still leads the lineup.

Thirty very conservatively rated watts from a quartet of EL-84’s, through two channels, each with unique voicing and tone control layouts, produce a world of tone choices. True “Class A” configuration gives rich, complex harmonics whether played clean, mildly overdriven, or with all out power tube saturation.  This means you should sound great in any situation, in any music style.

A long list of musician designed features includes:  highly interactive tone controls and circuitries unique to each channel, bypassable master volume, individual channel effects loops, cut control for high frequency shaping, high and low (30 or 15 watt) power settings, selectable output impedance and phase inverter switches allow the use of additional speaker cabinets or amps in-phase with the DC-30.

The preamp sections are based on a layout of two 12AX7’s in Channel 1 and one EF86 in Channel 2. The two 12AX7’s in Channel 1 create a parallel-triode circuit with interactive bass and treble. The one EF86 in Channel 2 consists of a high-gain pentode coupled to a six-position tone switch. Outright benefits include quick dial-in of new tones and an easy return to the settings you prefer.  Also “high treble” cut control, master volume, with a bypass feature that offers flexible control of the power amp section. The power amp is fed by a 12AX7 phase inverter, which drives four EL84 power tubes. The rectifier circuit gives you the flexibility of using one 5AR4 for a quick attack or you can use two 5V4’s for a smooth, round response. Other professional features include an effects loop, half power-mode switch (a conservative 30 watts switching to 15 watts), output impedance selector (4, 8, 16 ohms) and a speaker phase-reverse switch.

Sound on the 212 Cab is delivered through two dissimilar Celestion speakers:  a G12H30 and a Greenback 25, each specially modified through a proprietary MATCHLESS formula.  All of this is encased in an extremely sturdy hand-made 11-ply, 3/4” Baltic birch cabinet, wrapped in richly textured Elk and Cream vinyl.

Clubman 35 REVERB 35 Watt Head with Reverb Elk/Cream/Gold with
Matching ESS 1×12” 30 Watt Open Back – 8 ohm Elk/Cream/Gold
£3495

The 35 watt Clubman offers pleasingly complex tones due to its unique, custom pentode preamp section based on two 12AX7s and one EF86 tube.

Controls include Volume, Bass, Treble, Brilliance, and Master Volume. Optional Reverb makes this amp truly versatile. A pair of EL34 tubes make up the power section. An effects loop simplifies performance set-up. You will instantly notice why this work-horse is the top choice of pro touring Blues, Jazz and Rock artists around the world including Robert Cray. The Clubman can be matched to any Matchless extension cabinet but is most frequently paired with the Matchless ESD or ESS.

Nighthawk NH-112 REVERB 1×12” 15 Watt Combo with Reverb Elk/Cream/Gold
£2695

Driven by the more aggressive EF86/6267 circuit and a Six Position rotary Tone Selector, the Nighthawk will go from delivering amazing, delicate clean sounds and to turning into an all-out blazing rock amp.

Outright benefits include quick dial-in of new tones and an easy return to your preferred new settings. Master volume and Preamp Volume offers flexible control of the power amp section. The power amp is fed by a 12AX7 phase inverter, which drives two EL84 power tubes. This one really packs a punch!

Notes and tips from Phil Jamison:

“If we start with its ability for a crystal clear clean sound we should always turn the Master Volume control as far up as it will go before power section saturation.
Setting the Input Volume control to around the 8 to 9 o’clock position the Nighthawk will produce the cleanest signal. Then using the Rotary Tone selector to find what works best with the pickup and voicing for the song.

Each of the six positions will provide a slightly different voicing that will go from Bright and thin to fat with more bass. This is ideal for the many different varieties of pickups, guitars, and cables out on the market.
Some pickups with hotter output will react differently with the EF86 and it may sound more aggressive. While this is a perfect compliment for a heavier rock sound, it’s not ideal for clean. With a Nighthawk you will lose some headroom for a cleaner sound.

But, as it turn ups slightly more you instantly get a dynamic and front end jangle that many have come to know and love with the response of a Matchless.  Turning the volume control up much higher around the 3 to 4 o’clock position will be ideal for a variety of rock sounds. Then adjusting the perfect voicing is a snap. As you go up on the Tone Selector you will notice the amp will have more midrange and sound slightly more fuller than before. Keeping it on this setting will enable you to clean up by rolling down the volume on your guitar and still maintain clarity.”

Lightning LG-112 REVERB 1×12” 15 Watt Combo with Reverb Elk/Cream/Gold
£2695

The sound of the Lightning is that very classic EL84 “British Sound”. Much more scooped in the midrange than the Spitfire and Nighthawk, you will quickly see how well it sits in the mix against other instruments. Its clarity and voicing will slice through everything, making you very present.

Actual tonal possibilities are very extensive and it produces loud output volumes not normally associated with a 15 watt rating.

The Pro-grade single channel preamp with its interactive tone controls is coupled to a serious dual-EL84 power section with a tube rectifier. All models have active EQ to attain an excellent array of complex tones. User controls include Volume, Interactive Bass & Treble, and Master Volume.

Notes and tips from Phil Jamison:

“The tone stage is based off the early Top Boost circuit with some modifications unique to the Lightning. The Bass control will add a heavier sound and increase the midrange as you turn it up. This is very beneficial with different styles of pickup that have a thinner sound, or fatter pickups that need the Bass rolled off for more clarity. The Treble control will do two things in this type of circuit, first it will of course add more top end and brightness, and subsequently it will decrease the midrange. This is can be a very important feature to help tailor the sound of your pickup.

For a cleaner sound it’s always best to turn up the Master Volume, and keep the Input Volume around the 8 to 9 o’clock position. The foundation of the Lightning is to produce a flawless clean sound, but as you increase the volume control you will start to get into clean and dynamic front end breakup. Turning the volume control all the up will give a perfect distortion sound without over saturation. This is ideal for a hard rock sound where clarity and presence is needed.”

Spitfire SP-112REVERB 1×12” 15 Watt Combo with Reverb Elk/Cream/Gold
£2695

Driven by one 12AX7, simplistic in design but with a wide range of function and tone.  The creamy tone of the Spitfire perfectly galvanizes the bridge pickup sound for both classic and modern rock sounds. The easy to dial controls and minimalist foundation makes it perfect for Jazz, Blues, Chord Melody, Country picking, and Rock.

The Spitfire comes in a lightweight, compact cabinet, but still packs the same punch you’ve come to expect from Matchless.

Like all Matchless amplifiers, the Spitfire is hand made, point to point wired and tough as nails. User controls are Volume, Tone, and Master Volume

Notes and tips from Phil Jamison:

“Starting with the Volume control slightly up towards the 11-12 o’clock position and the Tone control completely off you will hear the amp as fat and rolled off, lots of bass and no highs. Slightly turning up the Tone Control you will hear the preamp become slightly brighter near the 9 o’clock position. This is ideal for an ultra warm jazz sound or for strumming chords to add a rich layer to the rhythm section.

Turning up the Tone Control again will now not only add even more brights but will also add slightly more drive to the attack. Setting it further up to the 3 and 4 o’clock position will give the amp considerable more punch and clarity. This is where most of the amps abilities will leap out with that classic Matchless Touch Response sound will come from.  This will add more hair on the front end attack and give that “crash and burn” feel. As you dig in and play your guitar harder the amp will have more breakup on the attack, as you back down it will clean up to your hands lighter touch.”

SC-Mini 12″ 1×12” 6 Watt Combo Elk/Cream/Gold
£1095

The new Matchless SC Mini, 6 watt combo.

Several years of R & D went into the creation of the SC-Mini.  The ultimate goal was to create an entry level, highly affordable Matchless amp while staying true to our quality based principles in performance and sound.  The result is a tube amplifier constructed with a single PC board based on Channel 2 of the larger Matchless C-30 Series.

The SC-Mini was created to be an affordable, entry level Matchless amp that can be used in the studio as well as smaller performance venues where a lower volume output is essential.  It took several years of design and refinements by Phil Jamison in order to create an amplifier at an attainable price point while staying true to our quality based principles in performance, sound and construction methods.  The result is an all tube amplifier constructed with a single PC board based on Channel 2 of the beloved Matchless C-30 Series.

In order the achieve the affordable price point, the chassis is constructed off site under the strict supervision of Phil Jamison and then finished in house and assembled into our handmade speaker cabinets before undergoing rigorous testing.  Each SC-Mini is loaded with the same customized Celestion Heritage G12H30 that is used in all of our amp and speaker cabinet models.  Each SC-Mini also includes our signature hand wired back lit MATCHLESS logo.

Also, like the C-30, the output section is powered by the EL84 power tube however, the SC Mini has a single ended output transformer using only one EL84/6BQ5 tube, thus making the SC Mini a true “Class A” amplifier.

With a 5AR4/GZ34 tube rectifier, one EL84, one EF86, and one 12AX7 the SC-Mini has the same classic tone and feel as the C-30 industry standard, simply scaled down in size and volume.
Features: Volume, 6 Position Rotary Tone Switch, Cut Control, and Master Volume.
