For two decades, the Fender Custom Shop has astounded players and collectors worldwide with marvels of creativity, ingenuity and artistry. From humble mid-’80s beginnings in Fender’s original Southern California home, the Custom Shop has grown to become the world’s preeminent maker of custom “instantly collectible” instruments; a veritable dream factory that has made Fender’s finest the world’s finest.

The Fender Custom Shop’s skilled builders are known worldwide for their ingenious vision, matchless skill and dazzling creations, be it one-off art guitars of astounding originality, or signature models and replicated instruments so meticulous in detail that they’re virtually indistinguishable from their artist counterparts and historical ancestors—as represented by the highly desired Time Machine Series, or the wildly successful Custom Shop Tribute Series instruments, which include replicas of the personal instruments of famous artists, such as Eric Clapton’s BLACKIE® Stratocaster® guitar and Jeff Beck’s Esquire® guitar.

For more than 20 years now, many of these fantastic instruments were custom made to be delivered into the capable hands of the world’s greatest guitarists, and several Custom Shop models consequently became famous in their own right.

While the Custom Shop has a colorful history of creating magnificent instruments for the Claptons, Vaughans and Mayers of the world, it also builds instruments for players, collectors and enthusiasts everywhere. The Fender Custom Shop’s artistry is available to all who appreciate a truly fine instrument—that includes the greats, and it includes great admirers of those greats. It allows a vehicle for artists and consumers to partner with and invest in Fender’s rich legacy and history.

The Beginning

Through the mid-1980s, Fender filled orders from artists for custom guitars through its R&D model shop.

But by late 1986, Fender was ready to explore ways to elevate its image from “working man’s guitar” to that held by some of the most respected boutique builders. Former Fender CEO Bill Schultz made it his personal mission to see this happen and set plans in motion to introduce custom-built products. The idea was to build a few custom instruments for artists and some showpiece instruments for trade shows. Little did they know what the very near future held in store for the fledgling operation.

The Fender Custom Shop began producing its first instruments in 1987 in a small, 850-square-foot space next to the main Fender factory. The instruments drew rave reviews, and led to more than 600 orders that summer.

The operation was expanded immediately to cope with high demand and included special limited-edition and price-list models, making the Custom Shop a viable marketing option in addition to being a true custom operation. More builders were gradually enlisted. Builders were “in the trenches”—working directly with artists on a daily basis, keeping Fender on the cutting edge and producing instruments of unbelievable beauty and startling originality.

The Custom Shop embodied a new attitude at Fender—a commitment to responsiveness and to meeting the needs of the customer, be it a Clapton, a Beck, a Vaughan, or the man on the street. Features and production techniques that were devised in the Custom Shop for the greats often found their way to Fender’s other production lines, improving quality across the board.

In the hands of popular artists of the day, Custom Shop guitars began gracing concert stages and recording studios worldwide. All along, the Custom Shop’s reputation and prestige grew accordingly as its craftsmen turned out one magnificent instrument after another. The original format of the shop continues to this day and in fact uses many original Fender techniques and much original Fender tooling. Established artists and amateurs alike clamor for distinctive Custom Shop instruments as never before, some waiting months for the instruments they’ve always dreamed of owning.

Instantly Collectible

Now, more than 20 years later, the Fender Custom Shop continues its rich tradition of the finest craftsmanship and personal attention to detail. Its guitars are among the most sought-after instruments on the market; musical creations that are indeed “instantly collectible.”

The Custom Shop was created to push the envelope for Fender, building on dreams and transforming them into beautiful instruments. For more than two decades now, the Fender Custom Shop has combined Fender’s rich legacy and unique R&D capabilities to set the standard in custom and high-end products and design.

Today, Fender’s highly acclaimed and skilled team of builders continues to take the Custom Shop into the future while keeping a firm footing in its history and heritage. Simply put, the Custom Shop proudly represents the very best that Fender can build. And Fender’s best is the world’s best.

We have been hand-selecting, photographing, setting up and selling high end guitars for over 30 years. In this time we have always understood just how important it is to get the setup right. The best guitar in the world can feel very average if it's not setup properly. We have always made this a priority on every single guitar that leaves World Guitars.

I live in the Middle East where there are no meaningful music stores, and certainly nothing like World Guitars. I also have GAS. I now own four guitars and an amplifier bought from World Guitars, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. The responsiveness and customer-service is second to none, and they handle the shipping professionally – guitars come out the case intonated and in tune and ready to play! Spending money on premium guitars and amps from overseas takes trust – it is that simple, and World Guitars is my trusted supplier of high-end gear in the UK.
