1998 Gibson Les Paul Ultima in Heritage Cherry Sunburst.
Conceived in the early years of the Gibson Custom Shop as a way to showcase the very highest level of their craftsmanship, the Les Paul Ultima was a no expense spared, top of the line creation from the Custom Art Historic division. This 1998 Les Paul Ultima is a fantastic early example, constructed from a figured Mahogany body with dynamic sound chambers. Mahogany neck and bound Ebony fretboard, along with a AAA grade flamed carved maple top, finished in 'Heritage Cherry' sunburst. The body is fitted with a set of Custom Shop Classic '57 Humbuckers, along with abalone binding around the body.
The Ultima was launched with a choice of four ornate fretboard inlays; Flames, Tree O Life, Harp and, as fitted on this guitar, Butterfly abalone fretboard inlays. The Butterfly option was very quickly discontinued and these examples are very rare. The headstocck features a unique abalone Les Paul headstock inlay.
This particular guitar is an excellent condition with almost no play wear to speak of. There is some age checking in the finish but is internally and externally original, and complete with its original Gibson custom case. Other features include all gold hardware with the original gold and pearl Grover Imperial tuners and an ABR1 bridge with Trapeze tailpiece. Nice light weight at 7lb 14oz.
